Kwajalein Atoll Forecast
Wednesday, November 27, 2024
The robust Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) has now extend well to the west deep into the FSM across the south RMI. Its central east-west axis is quite close to Kwajalein Atoll, but instead of giving us the typical doldrum wind conditions that one would expect, winds have been able to remain elevated due to its lower than normal pressure, and the steep pressure gradient that it has induced between itself and subtropical high-pressure near Hawai’i. Broad troughing will continue to propagate along it east to west, and keep widely scattered showers in the picture for the rest of the day and into the evening with a slight lull in activity around sunset. Thursday will be a transition day. The central RMI will start the day under the direct influence of the ITCZ, and by the end of the day, trade wind surge conditions will build in, with a strengthening subtropical high-pressure ridge north of the RMI, pushing a still robust ITCZ south of the Marshall Islands. This factor will place Kwajalein Atoll at about the mid-point between the steep pressure-gradient of the high-pressure to the north and lower pressure to the south, bring up the winds. With respect to precipitation, Thursday will start with the wetter conditions of the ITCZ, then see showers decrease to isolated in nature, as the trade wind surge builds in. A trade wind surge has the effect of created a mid-level inversion at about 10,000 feet, which tends to retard shower growth, but keeps less wide spread showers in the picture due to the wind speed convergence created at the surface. Looking beyond tomorrow, the wind will become the name of the game. Expect this surge in the winds to occasionally strong levels, to result in moderate-rough seas; this will coincide with the spring tides of the New Moon, which could result in some light splash-over on eastern facing shores. This is not expected to be at advisory or warning levels. We will be following this closely, as we approach Saturday. Shower coverage will be 25% this afternoon, 15% during the early evening, increasing back to 20%, as the evening progresses. Combined seas in the open ocean will be 5-7 feet. AWB
